Be Thankful

When living in South Africa, you see and hear about poverty every day. I see people lying in rows on the paving infront of shops, trying to keep warm under cardboard. I see young children begging at almost every set of lights. I see people in wheel chairs on the side of the road, trying to sell some home-made fudge just to make ends meet. I see young boys walking past our house every week trying to sell handmade grass brooms. I hear how our gardeners tin shack got destroyed, and everything was stolen. I hear from my maid that all her cows have been stolen, and that her family has kicked her out of her home, and how many of her relatives are dying or have died from Aids. I hear of child abuse, and murder every day on the news. Every Monday, (bin day) I see many, many people, old and young digging through my rubbish bin, and eating scraps of food that I have thrown away. Its hard not to become negative. But on the other hand, it becomes easy to be thankful! Thankful that I have a house to live in, a warm bed to sleep in, food on the table, we can read freely from God's word, and go to church on Sundays, in a car! That the children in our church can also attend good Reformed schools. Thankful that I have a healthy little boy, a caring husband. Thankful that my parents could afford to send me to school. Thankful that we can afford private health care so that we dont have to go to a public hospital in the city and wait for hours, sometimes days just to see a doctor...and the list goes on. So many things to be thankful for.

Are you thankful?

Gogo & another blanket finished

Joshua decided to help 'gogo' (Virginia) yesterday. When Joshua is naughty, she always tells him 'betha wena', but this time Joshua looks at Virginia and says 'betha wena' (I'll smack you in isiZulu, so cheeky!) He copies quite a few words she says, wouldn't it be great if he can learn THREE languages?! :-)

another baby blanket completed!! (still need to block it a bit to pull it into shape!)

 loving my labels!

I looked after Kirsten this morning, she was such a sweetie-pie!

ok Winston, how would you like your steak done? Or would you prefer boerewors?

braai salt?

Growing so fast!

Joshua is almost 20months already, and becoming a real little man! He will actually sit still on my lap for almost 5 minutes now :-) and I just had to take this photo of him lying on the couch 'reading' a book...a first!! (maybe it means he's getting sick?!?)
waars ek Mamma??

fabric labels have arrived!!

My long-awaited fabric labels arrived in the post this morning!

all one-hundred-and-sixty of them :-)

They are no-fray sew in fabric labels. I'm very pleased with them, but I will have to order smaller ones for on the baby things I make, they're a little too big.

...but perfect for on blankets!!

even this grubby little man was excited!

baby blanket complete!

I love this baby blanket! I bought the pattern from Etsy, the designers name is creJJtion. I'm looking forward to making another one in different colours!

I managed to get hold of some Vinnis 100% cotton yarn. A lady in Capetown hand-dyes it. Its so beautiful and soft, perfect for baby things.

a new beanie pattern

I discovered this cute beanie pattern on Ravelry last week, and I just had to make one for Joshua. I think it looks so cute!! Its really soft & stretchy. Nice and warm for the coming winter. The pattern can be found here. I used a 6mm crochet hook.

sunny & colourful May

Well, mission accomplished...I've finished the throw! I just love the sunny colours. I'm still wondering whether I should add a row of yellow crocheted flowers, but I kind of like the simplicity just as it is.
I added a simple picot edging

Say cheese!! Joshua was taking lots of photos of his Pappa with the playstation thingy!

The laundry got painted on Saturdy. Still loads of finishing off work to do, but its a big improvement! I love the fresh colour, its a kind of 'duck egg blue'.
looking into the laundry from the kitchen

:-)

Hmm, definitely need a nice new light...maybe a crocheted one :-)

I'm almost finished tiling the table too. I just had to throw in this random tile ...

now I just need to do the grouting, and paint the table legs. The whole room still looks very bare, but dont worry, I'll sort it out chop-chop :-) or should I say 'swipe-swipe' (sshhh)

Nothing is out of his reach anymore! Last night he burnt his finger on the frying pan, he's just so quick! I told him it was hot, then he just looked at me and said "is nie" (isn't) and touched it, so I suppose it was a good lesson for him! (its not too badly burnt by the way!)

Joshua, Winston & I have been enjoying morning walks to the park lately, it looks really pretty at the moment! Winston is really good on the leash, he walks perfectly next to the pram, and when we get to the park I let him loose, he loves it!
